The workshop:
Our proposed workshop has, in sum, three closely related goals: to study and analyze classic medieval discussions of the problem of evil by some of the greatest Jewish and Christian authors using the analytic toolbox of Anglo-American philosophy; to show the fluid connections and relations between the philosophical traditions of Medieval Judaism and Christianity; and to explore their common use of scriptural exegesis as a genre of philosophy, showing its relations to and differences from traditional ways of doing and writing philosophy.
The workshop is entitled: Philosophical Interpretations of the Book of Job and the Problem of Evil: Jewish and Christian Perspectives. The workshop will be interdisciplinary and inter-religious in nature bringing together both perspectives from philosophy and theology as well as from Christianity and Judaism. A main focus of the workshop is going to be the inclusion and advancement of junior scholar research.
We will produce short interviews, which will grant easy access to the topics discussed in the workshop. A selection of papers presented will be published in a special issue of the European Journal for Philosophy of Religion.
