Dr. Johannes Stoffers SJ

My name is Johannes Stoffers, aged 33 years; I am assistant teacher at the Jesuit Faculty of Philosophy in Munich (Germany). After some years out of the research context, I re-entered in autumn 2015 the area of philosophical work. Since my first cycle studies of philosophy and theology, I am especially interested in the questions which border on these two disciplines, i.e. the demonstration of the rationality of faith, the God-world-relationship, the justification of belief with regard to evil in the world, the Holy Trinity, and the question of grace and freedom. In my second and third cycle studies I worked more or less in this same area, researching the writings of Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, representatives of German idealism. I finished these studies with a license (Licentia) in theology at the Gregorian University, Rome (Italy), in 2010 and with a doctorate in philosophy at the Eberhard-Karls-University, Tübingen (Germany).

Being part of a research project on the “Concept of God”, funded by the John Templeton Foundation, I will center – during my post-doctorate studies, which I have just begun – on how to conceive the God-world-relationship in terms of Panentheism and on its implications for the inner constitution of the Godhead itself. I hope to see the special difference that an understanding of the Divine Trinity makes to this question. Special reference will be done to the works of Charles Hartshorne and Joseph A. Bracken. To enable further steps of dialogue among different philosophical traditions, I will attempt to connect contemporary work in Analytic philosophical theology with the resources of European continental philosophy, represented possibly by Nicolaus Cusanus.
