Tenure-Track Professorship in Ancient Philosophy with a focus on Practical Philosophy (W2) (m/f/d)
The Munich School of Philosophy (Hochschule für Philosophie München, HFPH) invites applications for a
Tenure-Track Professorship in Ancient Philosophy with a focus on Practical Philosophy (W2) (m/f/d),
to be filled at the earliest possible date.
After a period of six years, the position includes a tenure option, i.e. the opportunity for promotion to a permanent W3 professorship, in accordance with the HFPH’s tenure regulations. The appointment will be made on an employed basis under the Bavarian W salary scheme.
Profile and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct research and teach in Ancient Philosophy, with a clear emphasis on practical philosophy. The candidate is expected to develop an independent research profile, pursue externally funded research projects, and actively contribute to the scholarly profile of the HFPH. Teaching and supervision will cover all academic levels, from undergraduate (Bachelor) to doctoral studies. The candidate is expected to support and promote the academic development of students and early-career researchers. The position is embedded in an international and interdisciplinary academic environment, including cooperation within the global network of Jesuit universities as well as with Bavarian and other national and international partner institutions. Active participation in the academic self-governance of the HFPH is also expected.
Initially, the professorship is established for six years as part of an endowed position in “Philosophy and Democratic Capacities”. Applicants are therefore expected to address questions of practical philosophy particularly regarding democratic competence and democratic education from the perspective of ancient philosophical traditions, and to integrate these perspectives into teaching, research, and the university’s third-mission activities. Within this framework, the successful candidate will be involved in the development and implementation of teaching modules for multipliers, especially in the context of teacher education.
Qualifications
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
• An outstanding doctoral degree in philosophy.
• Demonstrated teaching competence, including initial experience in teaching and supervising students.
• A successful postdoctoral academic record commensurate with career stage, including publications, third-party funding, invited talks, and international collaboration.
• Excellent proficiency in German (spoken and written). Applicants without native-level German are expected to demonstrate a willingness to acquire the required language skills within three years.
• An appreciation of, and openness to, the Jesuit tradition in higher education.
